Mission Viejo's Old Smokey Is All Ears

If Baby Yoda (aka Grogu) were to hook up with a teddy bear, their offspring might look exactly like... Smokey.

More likely, Ascension Leyba’s 14-year-old pooch is a Papillon mix. French for “butterfly,” Papillons are known for their large, wing-shaped ears. Big, fluffy flappers are certainly Smokey’s defining feature, though he also shares the breed's athleticism and cheerful disposition.

“He's always running,” says Ascension, a 30-year Mission Viejo resident. “Sometimes he goes three or four miles in a day”—which is a lot for a little dog with such short legs!
