Laura Lacko: A Lifetime of Service
Laura Lacko didn’t set out to be a politician. But here she is, vying for City Council in Mission Viejo's District 4.
The desire to serve her community may run in the family. Laura's twin sister, Jennifer Day, previously served as a member of Kansas' House of Representatives and is now running to be its Secretary of State.
Laura has spent more than 25 years giving back to her community. She’s volunteered at food banks, including Second Harvest Food Bank Orange County, and with AYSO in Rancho Santa Margarita as a coach, referee and board member.
She’s also a longtime supporter of Breakthrough T1D, an organization connected to the Type 1 diabetes she was diagnosed with as a child, as well as CHOC (now part of Rady Children's Health), the hospital that treated her. She’s given her time to Mission Viejo Pride and organizations supporting immigrant rights as well.
Restoring Trust at City Hall
Laura’s connection to Mission Viejo began as a high school student in 1988. After living in various parts of Southern California, she moved back to Mission Viejo in 2020. She soon began to feel that residents weren’t being adequately heard by the city’s leaders.
“My friends and I were always talking about how we thought things could be improved at City Hall,” she says. “So, with Trish Kelley terming out, it just seemed that the timing was right for me to enter the race.”
Laura's campaign website says that she’s running “to restore trust at City Hall and ensure that residents are heard before decisions are made.”
She sees transparency as essential to rebuilding trust between Mission Viejo residents and city leaders. “Residents deserve to know what’s happening before decisions are finalized, not after. That means clear communication, accessible leadership, and making sure people have a real opportunity to be heard.”
